When the Rail Delivery Group set out to personalise how millions of passengers plan their journeys, they needed more than a new front-end feature, they needed an infrastructure foundation that could handle complex, daily-updated rail data at scale.
Colibri partnered with RDG to design and deliver a robust, secure, and cost-optimised platform for the new “Create Your Own Timetable” tool. The result? A faster, smarter, and more intuitive travel planning experience, backed by infrastructure built to keep Britain moving.
The Rail Delivery Group (RDG) unites Britain’s passenger and freight rail companies, Network Rail, and HS2 under one umbrella to improve customer experience across the rail industry.
RDG provides critical national services on behalf of its members, including ticketing, travel information, and refund processing for both passengers and rail staff.

As part of the overhaul of the National Rail Enquiries website, RDG aimed to launch a new “Create Your Own Timetable” feature. This tool would allow users to generate personalised timetables based on their specific journey preferences.
To deliver this, RDG engaged a third-party vendor to develop the application but required a trusted partner to build and manage the underlying infrastructure. The platform needed to ingest, validate, and process complex timetable data from multiple sources and serve it in a seamless, scalable, and cost-efficient way to end users.
Given Colibri already managed RDG’s AWS environment, the team was a natural choice to support this next phase of digital modernisation.
