The Rail Delivery Group (RDG) brings together all the UK’s passenger and freight rail companies, High Speed 2, and Network Rail to work towards a shared goal: delivering a better railway for customers across Great Britain. As part of a recent initiative, RDG aimed to help National Rail Enquiries provide passengers with more accurate, real-time train location information.
With a new GPS system rolled out across the train network, RDG needed a cloud-based solution that could process high volumes of live data and make it available to customers instantly.
Colibri has supported National Rail Enquiries for more than a decade, helping to evolve and maintain its systems to handle traffic surges during major events like extreme weather or industrial action.
Building on that relationship, RDG selected Colibri to deliver its new Train Location and Movement Service (TLMS). The team designed a fully cloud-native application to capture, process, and analyse GPS data, while also managing the integration of TLMS with other systems.
To ensure zero downtime, the rollout followed a structured, three-phase deployment through test, pre-production, and production environments. This approach allowed for the early identification and resolution of any issues. Today, Colibri provides 24/7 cloud management and continues to fine-tune the infrastructure to keep performance high.
Through its long-term partnership with RDG, Colibri has developed deep expertise in the rail sector and remains a trusted collaborator.
The TLMS platform gives passengers timely, accurate updates as they respond to delays or service changes, and the system’s flexibility ensures that it can scale to meet spikes in demand.
