The Rail Delivery Group (RDG) unites Britain’s railway operators under a single organisation, aiming to deliver meaningful improvements in the customer experience. Colibri hosts several AWS-based services for RDG, but historically, each required separate credentials per user, creating both administrative complexity and security challenges.
To streamline access and enhance security, RDG engaged Colibri’s Public Cloud Team to implement secure single sign-on (SSO) across all services, along with multi-factor authentication (MFA). This enables users to log in using a single set of credentials, backed by the added protection of MFA.
"The IAM Identity Centre is a fantastic example of RDG and Colibri working together to find innovative solutions to increase the productivity and security of our AWS platform, and the data and functions it provides to the rail industry. MFA is now the industry standard and to have one sign-on process for all our accounts is a giant leap forward."
While AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) was initially considered, further evaluation revealed that AWS Identity Center offered greater functionality and long-term benefits.
Launched into production in January 2023, AWS Identity Center requires all users to enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) upon first login, strengthening security while simplifying the assignment and management of user permissions. Users only see the accounts they’re authorised to access, while those with elevated privileges receive read-only roles for general use, reducing the risk of accidental configuration changes.
Following a presentation of the solution and its benefits, RDG’s Senior Service Delivery Manager approved the implementation. With a centralised, user-friendly portal providing both console and programmatic access, AWS Identity Center has significantly reduced the time spent on user management tasks for RDG staff and third-party partners.
Previously, creating new user accounts required Colibri to share credentials via encrypted spreadsheets and a secondary communication method, adding time and complexity to the process. With the introduction of single sign-on and MFA, access to RDG’s cloud infrastructure is now significantly more secure and streamlined. This small change has delivered a noticeable improvement in productivity and reduced administrative overhead.
As an AWS Partner, Colibri provides access to subject matter experts, enhanced technical support, architectural guidance, and early insights into the AWS roadmap. This identity solution was identified through the continuous innovation workstream of Colibri’s Next Generation Cloud Managed Service, aimed at enhancing both security and efficiency for RDG.
Plans are underway to extend this implementation across all AWS-supported RDG services.
